  • Pregnancy ultrasound

    In obstetrics, the ultrasound diagnostics is applied at the early pregnancy stages to control its course and diagnose possible pathologies. The best way to control the whole process till the very labor is to take ultrasound regularly.

    Planned and repeat ultrasounds

    No special preparation for the first pregnancy ultrasound is required. You may need to drink some water to fill the bladder. It is necessary for the doctor to perform the diagnostics better. This examination is neither painful nor uncomfortable for a woman. Ultrasound is the safest examination for a mother and a child.

    The next ultrasound is scheduled right after the procedure, when pregnancy was diagnosed.

    The diagnostics is scheduled in accordance with the fetal development terms:

    • 10-11 week (in this period, the heart of the future child starts beating, the fetal development is analyzed to detect abnormalities);
    • 19-21 week (the development of separate organs is evaluated, and it is possible to diagnose the problems that are impossible to be detected at the earlier stages);
    • 32-34 week (the fetus is examined to detect any arrested embryonic development, the amount of amniotic fluids, placenta, the position of the fetus).

    Unscheduled pregnancy ultrasound

    A gynecologist may prescribe an unscheduled ultrasound diagnostics if a fetal abnormality or other complications are detected on the early stage. The unscheduled ultrasound may be prescribed if a pregnant woman experiences lower abdominal pain, bloody discharges, etc. In this way, the doctor can identify the problem and find a solution to any problem.

    Indications for unscheduled ultrasound are as follows:

    • A pathological condition that endangers the life of her future child;
    • Wrong fetal position, premature placental abruption;
    • Fetal distress.

    In such cases, the ultrasound is scheduled for any necessary time. The doctor assigns the exact date of the appointment.

    Types of examination

    Ultrasound diagnostics to confirm pregnancy is performed using a vaginal probe (that is inserted into the vagina). This diagnostic method allows for a more accurate evaluation of the changes in the female body related to her condition. This type of ultrasound may be performed on the 3rd week after conception.

    The most common type is abdominal ultrasound (the doctor moves a special probe of ultrasound-machine on the surface of a pregnant woman).

    The other types include:

    • Standard 2D ultrasound exam in two dimensions. It is performed to get information about the condition of the fetus and surrounding tissues. It takes around 15-20 minutes.
    • 3D ultrasound provides a three-dimension colorful picture on the screen of the machine. It enables to see a high-quality picture of the future child in detail. It is possible to see its sex, face, etc. It takes about an hour.
    • 4D ultrasound is similar to 3D one, but it broadcasts a real-time picture. That is why it is possible to evaluate fetal movements. It is also possible to record the picture. Not only do the parents get a photo of the child, but also a video.
