Male infertility is often caused by a number of factors. In severe forms, the standard in vitro fertilization programs do not give any positive results. In this case, the fertilizing ability of the sperm is extremely low thus it is impossible to achieve the desired goal.
Іntracytoplasmіc Sperm Іnjectіon (ICSI) is modern technology, indicated for such cases. It is an assisted reproductive technology with a proven high efficiency. The ICSI procedure involves the fertilization of an egg by injecting a spermatozoon in it using a special needle. It is effective even when there is an absence of ductusdeferens or in case of other genital defects.
In most of the cases, this fertilization method is recommended in cases of male infertility, when spermatozoa are unable to fertilize an egg on their own.
ICSI method may assist the men with the following pathologies to become fathers:
Іntracytoplasmіc Sperm Іnjectіon is used when the previous IVF attempts failed, and there are appropriate indications.
The procedure consists in sperm motility inactivation, then the spermatozoon is collected into a thin glass microneedle. An egg is kept still with special microscopic suction cup. The needle punctures the membrane of oocyte and the spermatozoon is injected directly into the cytoplasm. In this way, even a week and slow-moving spermatozoon may perform its function without any obstacles.
In this case, the artificial insemination procedure using ICSI takes about two minutes. After injection of reproductive tissue, the fertilized egg is quickly placed into a special environment for further growth.
The very procedure is not complicated, but it requires a high degree of concentration and attention of embryologist, because during the injection, materials from the culture media with a sperm cell should not get inside the egg. ICSI procedure is always performed by qualified and experienced embryologists, using the most advanced and highly accurate equipment only.
In the treatment programs with the injection of a spermatozoon into an egg, a maximum number of oocytes are fertilized to achieve the best result and the optimal number of embryos.
It is important to take into account possible negative factors in planning the treatment. The women of advanced age (40-45 y.o.) have eggs with thickened membrane and it decreases the possibility of fertilization with sperm of unsatisfactory quality. The younger is a woman, the higher are the chances of successful in vitro fertilization.
Male infertility may be accompanied by the complete absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate. In this case, the biological tissue may be obtained by a testicular puncture – TESA.
